Pediatric Abdominal Wall Defects
Pediatric abdominal wall defects include pathologies such as gastroschisis and omphalocele, which are congenital disruptions of the abdominal wall. Omphaloceles are characterized by a herniation of the intestines through a defect in the abdominal wall into a membranous sac at the umbilicus. Conversely, gastroschisis is characterized by herniation of the intestines lateral to the umbilicus and with no overlying sac. What follows is a brief description of the presentations, associations, and treatment of omphalocele and gastroschisis, respectively.
