Primary malignant bone tumors
Here is a guide to the 2 most common malignant primary bone tumors and their commonly tested characteristic X-ray findings!
Note: all 3 radiologically defined periosteal reactions described here could occur in either osteosarcoma or Ewing sarcoma. However, Codman triangle & sunburst are more commonly associated with osteosarcoma, while onion skinning is more commonly seen with Ewing sarcoma.
Malignant primary bone tumors are primarily a disease of children/adolescents—adults also get malignant bone tumors, but most are metastatic (especially breast & prostate).
